After our hike along the Cascade River and Hidden Falls (see previous blog https://soulcenteredphotography.blogspot.com/2020/10/fall-colors-up-north-and-hidden-falls.html) we continued north on Hwy 61 to our campsite at Judge Magney State Park (Minnesota). We stopped for the sunset at a favorite spot - the "Tombolo" along the Lake Superior hiking trail. I have been there many times in all kinds of weather conditions but never experienced anything like this before. As you can see on the first 4 photos the mood changed quite a bit in the 20-30 minutes we were there. All of a sudden the rock/island/tombolo was lit up by the setting sun in a golden-orange glow. Certainly one of those Wow moments I will never forget!! The next morning we visited Hollow Rock - another interesting rock formation near Grand Portage.
One of my favorite overlooks along Hwy 61 is near Grand Portage. You can see the Susie Islands and at the horizon Isle Royal is barely visible. I was surprised to see so many green trees yet as I thought up north the fall colors would be further ahead. But being close to Lake Superior must be a different micro climate.
Enjoy the tour and more to come!
