Fall colors in Iron County, Upson Falls, Wisconsin

 A day trip to the north of Wisconsin on September 28. 2023. I wanted to explore a few new locations in Iron County.

I stopped briefly at the Penokee overlook close to Mellen on Hwy GG. The sun came out and I was hopeful for a beautiful autumn day but it didn't last very long and the remaining day was mostly overcast.

My next stop was in Upson where I spent quite some time at the Upson Waterfall. It required a bit of climbing to get close to the falls and the rocks were slippery. My tripod with camera on it tipped over once - I was holding my breath when I saw it going down and landing on a soft spot. It could have easily hit a rock and broken the camera. Phew...

As I was continuing north I stopped a Corrigan's Lookout - a beautiful spot to view the area surrounding Upson Lake. Some of the fall colors were at peak or slightly past it (red and orange maple trees) and many trees were still green. The colors are so unusual this year!

My next stop was Superior Falls right at the border to Michigan. From the parking lot you have to walk down a very steep slope to get to Lake Superior and walk back a little to get to the waterfall. It's a charming little spot though the falls aren't very big.

I made a quick stop at Little Girl's Point - a sandy beach in Michigan. Shanti had fun digging in the sand and playing with another dog.

I slowly worked my way back home stopping here and there.

Siskiwit River, Cornucopia, Wisconsin

A few days ago we had a very hot and humid period in our area and I decided to escape the heat and head up north. I was dreaming of cooler temperatures at Lake Superior and possibly experiencing and photographing a sunset/sunrise. I did find the cooler temps, actually so chilly that I needed to wear a jacket and was freezing when I ate ice cream at the beach. 

Unfortunately no sunset/sunrise as it was overcast the whole time (2 days) I was there.

I found myself spending most of my time in the forest and along rivers/waterfalls in the area. As is often the case things don't work out as planned! But no complaints as I feel right at home in that environment.

I had heard about the Siskiwit River near Cornucopia and was delighted to finally spend some time there. The cloudy day was perfect for river/waterfall photography. What a charming and magical place to explore. 

There are trails on both sides of the river and I checked them all out. The view points of the following photos are from  both sides. 

I was curious about the name Siskiwit and found this definition:

A freshwater fish from Lake Superior in the Great Lakes, a variety of the lake trout.

From Winter to Summer

As I am writing this blog (May 22nd) it is a very chilly morning (close to freezing) here in northern Wisconsin. Looking out of the window though it looks like early summer. Not too long ago we still had some ice on the lakes and all trees were bare.

In the second week of May we had unusually warm temperatures, up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (30 C) and Nature just exploded. The woodland wildflowers or spring ephemerals popped up so fast and were done blooming within a blink of an eye. The Trilliums are still in bloom right now but due to the dense tree canopy they won't last long.

I feel like we all got "cheated" out of spring and went straight to summer. But I won't complain as the fresh greens are a welcome sight and the humming birds and Orioles  are back and regular guests at my feeders. I enjoy my walks with my dog Shanti and listen to the song birds and frogs. Shanti found a new passion - going for swims wherever he can, regardless how cold the water temperature is!
