Fall Color Trip, Cascade River State Park, early October 2023, part 1

I am writing this on the last day of October but the fall color trip happened at the beginning of the month. Somehow I didn't get around doing this any sooner.

We were camping at the Cascade River State Park close to Grand Marais. The weather was unusually warm which made the whole camping experience very pleasant. We had two beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Seeing the sun rising as a big orange ball at the horizon of Lake Superior is quite special.

We spent the first day heading north towards Grand Portage and visited High Falls, right at the canadian border. Then we went inland looking for fall colors. The maple trees were way past peak but there was a lot of yellow and green.

I wanted to see the Partridge Falls (Pigeon River at the canadian border) but was advised not to go there due to washed out roads. We happened to be driving in that direction when we met another photographer who was on his way to Partridge Falls and invited us to follow him. The road was narrow and bumpy but not a problem for a pick-up truck. I am so glad we went as the falls were spectacular!! It was a bit difficult to get good photos as the sunlight was right behind the falls.

On the way back we stayed in Grand Marais to watch a beautiful sunset with the Sawtooth Mountains at the horizon. Back at the campsite we made a fire and supper - the perfect ending of a beautiful day.

To be continued - enjoy, Susanne

Fall colors in Iron County, Upson Falls, Wisconsin

A day trip to the north of Wisconsin on September 28. 2023. I wanted to explore a few new locations in Iron County.

I stopped briefly at the Penokee overlook close to Mellen on Hwy GG. The sun came out and I was hopeful for a beautiful autumn day but it didn't last very long and the remaining day was mostly overcast.

My next stop was in Upson where I spent quite some time at the Upson Waterfall. It required a bit of climbing to get close to the falls and the rocks were slippery. My tripod with camera on it tipped over once - I was holding my breath when I saw it going down and landing on a soft spot. It could have easily hit a rock and broken the camera. Phew...

As I was continuing north I stopped a Corrigan's Lookout - a beautiful spot to view the area surrounding Upson Lake. Some of the fall colors were at peak or slightly past it (red and orange maple trees) and many trees were still green. The colors are so unusual this year!

My next stop was Superior Falls right at the border to Michigan. From the parking lot you have to walk down a very steep slope to get to Lake Superior and walk back a little to get to the waterfall. It's a charming little spot though the falls aren't very big.

I made a quick stop at Little Girl's Point - a sandy beach in Michigan. Shanti had fun digging in the sand and playing with another dog.

I slowly worked my way back home stopping here and there.

Enjoy my little day trip up north - thanks for viewing, Susanne

Fall colors in the Blue Hills, end of September 2023

The weather turned overcast with fog, rain, wind on the day I returned from my short fall trip to the north shore of Lake Superior (see my previous blog: https://soulcenteredphotography.blogspot.com/2023/09/fall-colors-arrived-early-september-2023.html ) . This pattern lasted 10 days!! and it was exactly at the peak of the fall colors in our area (northern Wisconsin).

Needless to say I didn't get out much to take photos. Though fog and cloudy days can create some beautiful moods and saturated colors, I did miss the brilliance of sunlight shining through the trees and adding that special sparkling moment.

I did go on a trip north to Iron County to explore some new locations. I am working on a separate blog on that.

The following photos were taken from September 23.-29. 2023 in my neighborhood (Rusk County). The color patterns were unusual this year - orange, red maple trees on one side of the road whereas the same trees were still green on the other side!!

A truly magical moment happened on the morning of September 29. I noticed an orange/golden glow outside right around sunrise. The whole forest was illuminated in this unusual light. It only lasted 3-5 minutes and I quickly took a few photos of my driveway. Wow!

We had a lot of wind and rain that blew off the beautiful leaves way too fast.

Enjoy the fleeting moments of beauty seen through my camera lens. Thanks for viewing. Susanne
