Water and Ice

I have always been fascinated with water and would spend many hours sitting at a river, observing the flow and listening to the sounds. It seems like a paradox - water is a constant and yet changing all the time.  We are living in extraordinary times that require strength, resilience and courage and at the same time softness, compassion and a loving heart.

A quote from the Tao Te Ching (Lao Tsu)  came to my mind that I want to share here:

The softest thing in the Universe

overcomes the hardest thing in the Universe.

That without substance can enter where there is no room.

Hence I know the value of non-action.

Teaching without words and working without doing

are understood by very few.

Now about the photos:

We are having an unusually warm December in northern Wisconsin. Somehow the months got mixed up as it was very cold earlier in October.

Nevertheless ice has been forming in creeks, rivers and lakes. I was able to visit Morgan Falls recently. It snowed the night before which covered the rocks just with a little dusting of snow that looked like someone sprinkled powdered sugar.

There was quite a bit of ice already but still open water to enjoy and listen to.

Morgan Falls is a favorite waterfall of mine and is located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, near Mellen, WI. It is the state's second highest falls (70 ft) and tumbles down a rock face in steps.

The last 6 photos were taken at Little Falls, Flambeau River (north of Hawkins, Wisconsin) - another favorite place that I visit often.

New Ice

Every winter starts out different. This year (Dec. 2020) the lakes and creeks are freezing up before any significant snowfall and nature is putting on quite a show in her display of intricate ice patterns. In other years it has been a short window to admire these ice creations. It is a fascinating world and I can loose myself for hours photographing the amazing patterns of the ice. It is like a miniature landscape viewed from above.

I can't help wondering - is there any intelligence behind these creations or are they randomly formed? All I can do is marvel at nature's mysteries and beauty.

The last 5 images are from last year, November 2019.

Thanks for viewing and enjoy!

Spring in the Marengo River Valley, Wisconsin

I had heard about a beautiful overlook, Juniper Rock, along the North Country Trail but it wasn't until last fall that I was able to go there. It is located about 10 miles south east from Grand View in Bayfield County, northern Wisconsin. The views into the Marengo River valley are spectacular and I knew I had to come back in the spring.
The following photos were taken on May 4th (except for the last one which was taken in the fall). I was captivated by the subtle colors and textures of the early spring forest - everywhere I looked I saw something new, another possible composition.
The silver grey color of the Aspen trees were lit up by the sunlight, little clusters of red from the Maple trees and the green color of the Fir or Spruce trees lined up along the river - a perfect painting by Nature!
As the clouds were moving and casting their shadows over the landscape, even more interesting patterns emerged.
It was a most delightful spring day in the north country!! Enjoy!
