Early November trip up North, 2022

We had very nice and warm weather in early November. I took advantage of that and went for a short trip up north along the north shore of Lake Superior, Minnesota.

I just got around now processing the photos from 3 weeks ago and am sharing a few here.

My first stop was at Amnicon Falls State park in northern Wisconsin. The water levels were still low but enough to get a few photos of the Amnicon river and waterfalls.

Then I spent some time at Split Rock lighthouse along the north shore of Lake Superior and enjoyed the afternoon and sunset there.

The following day I hiked at Tettegouche State park (Two Step Falls) and spent a little time in Grand Marais. I walked out to the lighthouse with Shanti who was very excited as he got to watch some ducks.

Sparkly Winter Wonderland at Lake Superior, part 1

Finally the long awaited winter trip to Lake Superior's north shore became a reality. I had seen photos of the beautiful ice along the shore and was hoping to get there before it would disappear. It can happen over night, depending on the direction of the wind the ice can all break up and blow out. But what an amazing sight when we arrived - in all the years I have gone to Lake Superior in the winter I have never seen that much ice and so many different shades of blues! Wow, it was almost overwhelming and I felt like being in a dream world - the blue sky and bright sunlight, sparkling everywhere . It was like being in a Crystal City!

The following photos were taken at Brighton Beach near Duluth, Minnesota and Stoney Point. The last photos were taken after sunset at Split Rock Lighthouse.

Enjoy the sparkling images though they can hardly convey what it felt like being there!

Winter trip along Lake Superior's north shore

We happen to pick one of the coldest day in the winter of 2021 (February 14 &15.) to go on a short trip to the north shore of Lake Superior (Minnesota). We wanted to see the sea smoke that floats like fog across the surface of the lake when it gets really cold. We did get to see some but more on the horizon as the lake had frozen closer to the shoreline.

On the morning of the 15th I find myself standing at the icy shore near Split Rock lighthouse, waiting for the sunrise and trying to stay warm. The thermometer in the truck said -17 F (-27 C) but it feels much colder. Later I heard that it was -40 F (-40 C) at some places near my home in northern Wisconsin!! I was able to take a few photos before both my camera batteries quit working, my cell phone died and my fingers froze! I had to go back to the truck to warm up. It took an hour for the batteries to work again and by then the magical light was gone.

We continued on with our trip, stopping at various places and thoroughly enjoying the abundance of sunshine, the ice and cold temperatures. It takes some time to get dressed with several layers of clothing, hats, gloves, mittens, hand warmers, ice cleats etc. but it is so worth it.

I have been to Lake Superior during the winter months many times but every year is different. The ice formations are never the same - it feels like visiting nature's "art gallery" and you never know what to expect.
